The saga continues...

UPDATE 7:18 AM 9/29...

Here we are in day two of our birthquest. I'm awake and Karla is in and out of sleep. She's on the bottle (of oxygen) and feelin as relaxed as can be right now; the epidural is working its magic. When the docs came in at around 5 AM, they said she was at 6 cm (given yesterday's experiences, we hope that they are right :/ ).

We're callin for familial reinforcements at 8 cm. R u ready espageti?

They don't call it the medical "practice" for nothing

UPDATE 2:11 AM 9/29...

^8 cm...JK^

We were informed (and so were you via the last post) that she had dilated to 8 cm, which was a huge jump at the time. It was also welcome news cuz we had been at 1 cm for a good half of the day. Unfortunately, this was a misdiagnosis. I guess we owe this in part to the learning curve at UCSD Medical Center, a "teaching" hospital, where you can count on being attended to by residents (aka almost doctors/med students wearing badges that say they are legit, full-fledged doctors) nearly all of the time.

Anyhoo, the real deal turned out to be that she was only at 2 cm, despite the rapid increase in pain and intensity of the contractions. We were completely floored to realize this after all the preparations had been made for pushing, serious labor, etc. But given this opportunity to reevaluate our situation, we began to think along the lines of, "Holy moly, buddy, if this is what it is like at 2 cm, what's it gonna be like when we're really at 8 cm, or 10 cm?" Yipes. After a lengthy huddle and family conference, we went with the epidural to help ease that transition.

Karla is now resting in a peaceful slumber. Meanwhile, I'm writing this blog entry out, fueled by a quickly-diminishing caffeine buzz. Presumably, we're back to it in the morning. For now, sweet suenos.

Here we go!

UPDATE 10:48 PM 9/28...

Doctors said Karla's at 8 cm right now and progressing rapidly. She starts pushing at 10 cm. The contractions are off the charts right now and they look pretty intense to a spectator like myself.

Hang in there, babe :)

Happy Birthday??

UPDATE 8:11 PM Thursday 9/28...

We're still waitin on the little guy or gal. At this point the contractions are getting pretty intense, but the frequency of them hasn't really changed all that much. The doc said that she isn't any more dilated than she was earlier in the day despite the fact that they induced labor.

One of the nurses said earlier that she thought the baby would arrive sometime before midnight. A few hours later though, a doctor said that we might not expect the baby until tomorrow morning. So, save the happy b-days for near future.

If you were reading the previous post....Sike!

So, Karla's latest post was a total sike-out. We are here at the hospital (UCSD Hillcrest) as you are reading this, and KARLA IS IN LABOR!!

Here's the story. We got up as usual this morning (luckily the schools are on vacay right now so there's no work even if we wanted to) and during Karla's morning rituals, she realized that her water broke. There were no contractions at that point. We even thought it might be a false alarm. Once we got the the hospital, however, they did some tests and assured us that her agua did break and that we were in the initial stages of the miracle of birth. And yes, its totally miraculous so far.

Karla's hooked up to some machines to monitor all the good stuff, and we're just waiting now for what is to come.

Stay tuned gente!

why no, I am not having twins....oy vey

hi peeps, if you live in SD, I hope you're keeping cool cause I'm hating this heat wave!!!! This has been the week to call Karla huge, I've had two inquisitive people asking about the twins in my belly and one comment regarding the "impressive size" of my belly. With two weeks to go till week 40, which is delivery time, I am pretty large, not pretty coma large, just..... pretty large.

Kevin and I took a quick trip to Macy's this weekend where we had a gift card to spend and about 10 whole minutes... He HAD to make it home to watch the Chargers game which started in the same hour. His assignment was to find a boy outfit to bring our baby home in, if infact it's a boy, I found the girl one...He found a super cute one with a doggie on the tush, in record time, 3 mins, I picked the same exact one in pink, So now we have our his and her outfits washed and ready to be worn...all we need is the bebe...tick tock tick tock, I get so emotional just thinking about that first meeting with our baby, will he have his eyes open.... will he smile at us, will he be crying cause he's been ripped out of his warm home...will he know we're his parents...I can't wait, I'm so excited!

preview day

hola amigos, I love san diego, especially when it looks like it did today, Kevin took me to the coffee shop to get a delicious tea soy latte and enjoy the overcast day, it even sprinkled at one point. Fall starts tomorrow and I couldn't be more ready, im done with flipflops and cut off prego jeans, im so ready for coats, scarves and boots, oh and my baby on the hip/bjorn/bob....Kevin is not a bjorn fan as you can see from the picture below, I however love it and can't wait to carry my little bundle on my chest. Speaking of which, I'm full term now which means he/she could make his/her appearance at any point now. Technically I still have another 3 weeks to go but he/she might have other plans.

Kevin went into full interior designer mode so he hauled the crib from my parents house over to our humble apartment and after adding a rocking chair and a few other spiffy items, our baby room is now the coolest room in the house. I think we might sleep in there tonight, I call the crib Kevin! pictures of room coming soon, in the meantime, heres what my baby looks like still chillin in my belly.

The long and short of it

The long version: I can't decide if it seems like this pregnancy has gone by quickly, or if it seems like it has taken forever, probably both at different points. But now, its like time is standing still or something like that. We're going about our dailies as usual, but there is the possibility of this extremely life-changing event happening at any moment. I've heard it could go two weeks early or late, and right now we're about three weeks out, but I can see that little s/he in there movin around sometimes and I get the impression that s/he is not long for that womb.

We were talking earlier today about when we think it'll happen. I'm convinced that it'll happen in the middle of the night, so that we'll be rushing to UCSD H-crest in the early AM. I wanna have it all dialed in by then (the bag packed, car gassed up, head on straight, todo). I figure the best I can hope to be is "as ready as I'll ever be," because who really knows what to expect, ehh??

Anyhow, it could happen any minute now, buddies. We'll keep you posted.

The short version: Holy S#!t... I hope I'm ready :)

P.S. Does anyone else think those baby carriers are totes ridic??

36 weeks prego, almost full term!

has anyone every had this veggie before? I think I've seen it, but certainly never had it.

Baby KB (Killacky-Bautista) is the size of a Crenshaw melon today, almost 6 whole pounds!

little love note

Dear Kevin,
thanks for the pot roast last night, I can't believe we waited 3 1/2 hours for it to be done, it was well worth it though, mmmm, delicioso! Thanks for the sliders last week and the breaded tofu the week before, I may claim to do most of the cooking (which I do) but you cook the food that would get our kitchen a four star rating. I think you have a lifetime supply of IOU's from me for the late night ( 9pm) back massages, I always feel a little bad asking for them and you must have sensed it because I haven't had to ask you lately, you just do it, I love you for that :) I can't wait to see you holding our baby for the first time, you're gonna be an excellent father and not because of all the great advice in our prego books since the advice to dads is negated to a little tidbit in every chapter and as you pointed out its written by a girlee type who thinks dads are bench warmers. You're going to be a great dad because you're loving, patient, your sense of humor is endless, and you make some seriously wicked character voices when we read to my stomach at night (among other father of the year qualities of course). Only a few weeks to go babe, yuppeeeeee!!!!!Te quiero mucho viejo!
